Background of the study
Political defamation has emerged as a contentious tactic in local election campaigns, often undermining the integrity of democratic processes. In the Udu Local Government Area, instances of character assassination and misleading information are prevalent, affecting voter perceptions and candidate credibility. Such practices not only distort public discourse but also contribute to heightened political polarization and voter distrust (Obi, 2023). The strategic use of defamation is frequently employed to discredit opponents and manipulate electoral outcomes, raising significant ethical and legal concerns (Chukwu, 2024). This study investigates the role of political defamation in local election campaigns, examining its prevalence, mechanisms, and impact on voter behavior. By analyzing media reports, campaign strategies, and voter responses, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how defamation tactics shape electoral dynamics in the Udu Local Government Area (Ibrahim, 2023). The study seeks to offer recommendations to mitigate the negative effects of defamation in political contests.
Statement of the problem
The prevalence of political defamation in local election campaigns poses a significant threat to the integrity and fairness of electoral processes in the Udu Local Government Area. Despite growing concerns over its impact on voter perceptions and candidate reputation, there is limited empirical research addressing the mechanisms and consequences of defamation tactics (Adeleke, 2023). The ambiguity surrounding legal and ethical standards in political discourse further complicates the issue, resulting in unchecked practices that undermine democratic accountability. This study aims to address these challenges by systematically investigating the role of political defamation in local elections.
